Wayne and Rhonda Kwan (Hiroba)

Wayne Kwan immigrated to Canada from Hong Kong in 1974. The youngest of 14 children, he was encouraged by his father, Cheung Zhan`wen Kwan, to go off and see other parts of the world to learn, enrich and develop his own personal vision. It was one that stressed honesty, hard work and a desire to share success with your community. Since his arrival in Lethbridge, on a very cold wintry day in 1974, Wayne has always held his fathers words close to his heart. Since 1991, with his wife Rhonda as partner, he has owned and operated the very popular Hiroba food outlet at the University of Lethbridge. The close and lasting friendship they have established with students from around the world is very dear and special to them. They glow with pride as they watch them succeed, but also cry with sadness as they watch them depart. Wayne and Rhonda have three children, sons Ricky and Ben and their daughter Tiffany.

Impact

In keeping with the vision of his father and his long association with the University of Lethbridge it is with great pride that he names and establishes this scholarship in honour of his father, the `ZHAN`WEN` scholarship, to be presented annually to a student in International Studies.

“The world is getting smaller and smaller. With more education, society will have more harmony. Education may not make you rich, but it will provide fulfillment and allow you to make wise decisions,” Wayne says. “I hope the scholarship will give students the encouragement to pursue their goals.”
