In memory of Kalen Brown

In memory of Kalen Brown

Kalen Brown was a bright and beautiful boy, confident, optimistic and full of promise. In June of 1994, when he was 14 years old, Kalen was diagnosed with a form of bone cancer called Ewings Sarcoma. He fought a brave and uncomplaining fight, never losing his courage or his sense of humour. But, despite a remission that lasted several months, the aggressive, up-to-date treatment that was so successful at first was not enough to save him. He died in November of 1996, at the age of 16.

Impact

In the years since we lost Kalen, many more children have been lost, and continue to be lost—sometimes, tragically, from side-effects of the intense and risky treatments that are the best we have to offer them. As our understanding of biochemistry grows, we hope that the recipients of this scholarship will be able to contribute to developing treatments that will save children like Kalen.
