In Loving Memory of Logan Boulet
Logan Boulet, brother to Mariko and son of Toby and Bernadine Boulet, had been accepted to the University of Lethbridge and was set to begin his studies in the fall of 2018. He was planning to pursue a combined degree in education and was proud and excited to take the next step in becoming a teacher.
Logan’s life was tragically cut short in the Humboldt Broncos bus crash in April 2018. In a powerful final act of generosity, Logan, who had just registered as an organ and tissue donor on his 21st birthday (March 2nd, 2018), became an organ and tissue donor. His decision inspired more than 150,000 Canadians to register as organ and tissue donors in the weeks following the Bronco tragedy on April 6th. This sparked what is now known as the Logan Boulet Effect. From this ripple grew Green Shirt Day, a national movement promoting organ donation awareness and organ and tissue donor registration, recognized on April 7th of each year.
In honour of Logan’s spirit and generosity, the Boulet family has supported several initiatives at the University of Lethbridge. Their past contributions include donations to the Ric Suggitt Memorial Women’s Rugby Scholarship and the Paving Roads to Success Campaign, which provides bursaries for student teachers in rural placements. These gifts reflect the values Logan held and the family’s commitment to helping others succeed.
Impact
The Boulet family has now chosen to support students entering the Southern Alberta Medical Program. Logan was passionate about education and was eager to make a difference. The need for more rural family doctors in Alberta, along with the partnership between the University of Lethbridge and the University of Calgary’s medical school, represents an important cause that the Boulet family believes Logan would be proud to support. The rural setting of the Humboldt Broncos tragedy and the establishment of the Southern Alberta Medical Program highlight just how critical it is to train more doctors who are committed to serving rural communities.
By creating this scholarship, the Boulet family is continuing Logan’s legacy and helping future medical professionals who want to make a difference in rural Alberta. Their support not only honours Logan’s memory but also invests in the future of healthcare and community well-being across the province.
