In honour of Rolf and Karin von Heyking

In honour of Rolf and Karin von Heyking

The Rolf and Karin von Heyking Award is established in the memory of our parents whose own educational and vocational aspirations were impacted by their experiences as refugees from war. Both Rolf and Karin were born in Latvia and as young people they were displaced from their homes in 1939. After enduring the consequences of World War 2 they came to Canada as refugees from post-war Germany. Having been denied their own opportunities for post-secondary education, they provided extraordinary support for their children’s academic and professional endeavours. This award honours their memory and their legacy. It is intended to offer assistance that was not available to them and ensure that others who have been displaced from their home countries will be able to fulfil their educational aspirations here at the University of Lethbridge.

Impact

The Award provides a minimum of $1000 to full-time undergraduate continuing students with demonstrated financial need who have themselves been forcibly displaced from their country of origin.
